Matthies, Denys J.

Wearable sensors potentially enable for a better and unobtrusive recognition of human activity and the state of rest, sleep, stress and drive the ongoing trend of the quantified self-movement. As an enabling technology, powerful, while yet inexpensive MEMS-Chips micro-electro-mechanical system push the penetration of a broad variety of mobile devices.

Thereby, these devices gain high interest, not only in terms of general customer products, but also as integrated systems in an industrial context, either way to enable continuous monitoring of complex life processes and workplace situations. Another challenge that research is facing concerns the limited human abilities of interaction in context of mobility and in situations, in which high attention is being demanded. New and alternative ways are needed to be found in order to take advantage of all human capabilities to enable safe and unobtrusive interaction.

While we established the iWOAR workshop the 2nd time - in Rostock, North Germany - we aim to establish an annual tradition with the approach to bring together science and industry. It offers scientists, interested parties, and users in the area of sensor-based activity recognition and interaction the possibility to an exchange of experiences and a presentation of best-practice examples, as well as technical and scientific results.

The workshop focuses on technologies for human activity recognition and interaction via inertial sensors accelerometers, gyroscopes etc. Aehnelt, Mario ; Wegner, Karoline. In comparison to other work domains, we face in practice on the manufacturing shop oor little attention for the role of informal learning as key driver for manual assembly processes. There, smart assistance systems focus on process qualities and outcomes, not on the workers' abilities to cope with novel or uncertain work situations.

In this paper we present a conceptual approach on how to integrate information assistance and self-directed learning at the assembly workplace. We argue for embedding smart learning assistance behavior, based on the model of cognitive apprenticeship and provided by a cognitive architecture, with existing information assistance approaches. This paper describes an approach towards situation-based annotation management on the basis of work integrated activity recognition and situation detection. We motivate situation-based annotations as a means for collecting and processing contextual knowledge on the work domain in order to improve the quality of information assistance at mobile assembly workplaces.

Especially, when we make use of automated processes which aim to detect the worker's ongoing activities and situations, we have to deal at the same time with errors and wrongly inferred assumptions on reality. Here we see the strengths of annotation management which can be used to revise contextual background knowledge, required for determining the autonomous behavior, in case of errors and deviations between inferred and real situations.

Advanced manufacturing promises an evolution of industrial production processes. However, today's manufacturing systems lack a common strategy on how to combine factual, procedural, and conceptual knowledge in order to streamline production processes.

This specifically applies for manufacturing assembly assistance where the major share of procedural and conceptual knowledge is not yet automatically processable. In our paper we propose the usage of ontology-based annotations as missing link between the tacit knowledge of the worker and the intelligent assistance system. We show the deeper integration of conceptual knowledge modeled in ontology-based annotations with procedural knowledge in cognitive architectures.

Additionally, in our approach annotations act as a mean of communication between the workers and with the system. We show key aspects of a prototypical integration of our approach within a smart assembly assistance system which supplies the worker with task related information. Aehnelt, Mario ; Urban, Bodo.

Situation-aware information assistance strongly depends on the quality of available contextual background knowledge for an application domain and on its automatic processing. In this paper we present a conceptual approach towards using cognitive architectures to provide information assistance and allow complex decision making based on expert knowledge.

We transfer our approach into a technical concept which was finally implemented as part of the Plant Hand assembly assistance system within a mobile workshop trolley. The paper gives insights into our work on formalizing knowledge and providing ad-hoc mechanisms for planning, assisting and controlling assembly tasks on the manufacturing shop floor. The growing complexity of manufacturing calls for new approaches to support the human workforce with situation-aware information and tools which in consequence ease the process of understanding and applying work related knowledge.

With this paper we introduce a theoretical model for a systematic information transfer between assistance system and worker. It defines assistance objectives and reviews the role of artifacts during the assistance process focusing on the cognitive aspects of work. Our approach was implemented using smartwatches for application in industrial assembly environments extending the Plant Hand manufacturing performance support system.

Bader, Sebastian; Aehnelt, Mario. Tracking assembly processes is a necessary prerequisite to provide assistance in smart factories.

In this paper, we show how to track the construction of complex components. For this we employ formal task models as background knowledge and simple sensors like RFIDs. The background knowledge is converted into a probabilistic model that actually tracks the process. As a result, we are able to provide assistance in smart factories. We discuss the performance of the approach, as well as potential applications. Activity recognition helps to improve the quality of assistance applications by enabling adaptive and purposeful user support.

However, industrial applications require a far more robust recognition in order to ensure process reliable operations. The paper highlights specific challenges and requirements with respect to activity recognition from the perspective of assembly workplaces in manufacturing. A task-oriented assembly model is used to derive human activities based on sensorial observations of work equipment and material. Bieber, Gerald [Ed. It provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and present best practices as well as technical and scientific results.

The participants dealt with different technologies for the recognition of physical activity with the help of inertial sensor systems acceleration sensors, gyroscope etc. The present publication contains the contributions to the workshop. They reflect the current state of science and technology concerning specific technologies and applications in the fields of occupational health, lifestyle change and quantified self as well as production, maintenance and service.

A consistent user experience in combination with proactive assistance may improve the user performance while interacting with heterogeneous data sources as e. We describe our approach which is based on inferring the user intentions from sensory inputs, providing a situation aware information assistance, and controlling the environment proactively by anticipating future goals.

Our system has been realized within a smart meeting room and has in parts been evaluated. In this paper, we describe the core ideas underlying our approach and report on first findings from the evaluation. Visual analysis spanning multiple data sources usually requires the integration of multiple specialized applications to handle their heterogeneity. This is also true in manufacturing, where data about orders, personnel, workloads, maintenance, etc. Yet, the orchestration of multiple data sources and applications poses challenges to the software infrastructure and to the analyst.

We present a three-tiered approach to cope with these challenges. In a first step, we establish a domaindependent workflow as the mental model of the analyst. Based on the novel concept of contextualization, we then align the different applications with this model for their meaningful integration. In a third step, we incorporate the data according to its use in the aligned applications by means of a service-based architecture.

By starting the integration on the user level, we are able to pragmatically target and streamline the required integration to a degree that is technically achievable and interactively manageable. We exemplify our approach with the Plant Hand system for integrating manufacturing data and applications. The design of assistive environments often follows technological potentials and constraints in order to react on people's behavior and assist them in everyday life situations.

In this paper we discuss the role of mental models for improving the usability and user experience with assistive environments. We argue for a user-centered design including interaction design which provides intentional support in building, shaping and confirming the mental model of the user. The paper aims to motivate a wide discussion on design principles for assistive environments focusing on better user experiences and assistance qualities.

Aehnelt, Mario. Already in Peter Drucker postulated computational support for knowledge work as one of the major challenges of the 21st century. Diverse research has already been invested into the design and development of adequate and supportive technologies which aim to increase the performance of knowledge workers at their workplace. The paper outlines a conceptual and technical approach towards linking the advantages of contextualized access to knowledge with the flexibility of mash-up technologies in order to support knowledge exchanging activities at the workplace.

The approach considers mash-up technologies as innovative advance which simplifies the contextualization of both information and services based on a dynamic architecture model. Computer Supported Collaborative Learning Practices. Community Events Proceedings. Computational support for work-integrated learning will gain more and more attention.

Service-orientierte Architektur (SOA)

We understand informal self-directed work-integrated learning of knowledge workers as a by-product of their knowledge work activities and propose a conceptual as well as a technical approach for supporting learning from documents and learning in interaction with fellow knowledge workers. The paper focuses on contextualization and scripting as two means to specifically address the latter interaction type. Learning is a by-product of working when a problem, question or curiosity occurs during everyday work processes.

Thereby interpersonal help seeking is a commonly used learning strategy to acquire missing knowledge. Although the help requesting party benefits from other's help, helping people are interrupted in ongoing work processes. This correlation of work-integrated learning and unplanned interruptions can be addressed by providing support for interpersonal help seeking.

Multikonferenz Wirtschaftsinformatik 2008: München, Germany

Based on a generalized model of contextualized knowledge transfer, three different approaches are introduced to support the learning without interrupting others. We argue that in order to increase knowledge work productivity we have to put more emphasis on supporting this learning dimension of knowledge work. The key distinctions compared to other TEL approaches are 1 taking the tight integration of working and learning seriously, 2 enabling seamless transitions on the continuum of learning practices, and 3 tapping into the resources material as well as human of the organization.

Within this contribution we develop the concept of work-integrated learning WIL and show how it can be implemented. The APOSDLE environment serves as a reference architecture which proves how a variety of tightly integrated support services implement the three key distinctions discussed above.
