Excellent stay, with clean spacious room, great dining and friendly staff. We were very pleased with our stay at Mercure. Overnight stay at start and end of trek - showers were great. Steve G. Apparently your accommodation was at maximum capacity the days we stayed.
We were given a standard room in garden court, which was extremely noisy until am our first night. We had little use for the room other than sleep the second night, so did not pursue upgrading.
I chose Mecure because I stayed there upstairs in and loved it If we have the opportunity to visit Alice again, we will stay with you, but book directly! Nice hotel, well maintained. Adequate facilities. Stayed 2 nights a week apart. Check in was slow on both occasions. Only one person at the front desk and only when there were a lot of people waiting did 2 people help. Still, 20 mins to check in is too long.
On second night, aircon in room wasn't working, but was quickly resolved by moving us to another room. Took a bit of coaxing to get a late checkout, but this was happily accommodated which was nice.
Restaurant lunch was very good, as was breakfast. However breakfast was charged twice to my credit card, and still waiting for this to be resolved. Robert P. It was ok. I was severely put out by a completely ridiculous power switch system. So for your information, there are two switches on the wall upon entering, one operates the light above, the second, well it doesn't appear to do anything.
Of course I switched them both on. I noted that the clock was flashing, but didn't really take much notice as I don't really use alarm clocks. I plugged in my work phone, personal phone, and laptop computer.
All devices were close to empty, they all started to charge. I then got ready for bed, turning off the light switches at the entrance, and went to sleep. I couldn't understand what had happened, I thought perhaps there was a blackout or a fuse had blown.
I arrived at work looking like an idiot as my work phone was off, and my laptop was unusable at the sites I was visiting. When I had woken up that day I had briefly turned the lights back on to get ready, again noting that the alarm clock was flashing, quite weird.
I got back to the hotel later that day it was still quite light outside and I didn't turn on any switch at the entrance, I attempted to charge my phones before going out for dinner but they wouldn't charge. It was weird as the airconditioning panel was working next to the side power points that didn't, the TV worked, and when I checked the fridge, that worked too. I tried the powerpoint next to the coffee machine, it worked. How strange! I thought to myself. I went and spoke to the front desk. I asked if it was indeed the fuse, he said no, when we went into the room he turned on both switches at the entrance, and lo and behold, my devices started charging.
It turns out that next to the light switch 8 metres from the power points, the bottom switch powers the bedside lamps and the powerpoints. Why this is the case, and why no one actually informs guests of this is perplexing. I explained how much this had disadvantaged me and approximately an hour later, during dinner, I was told that Mercure could offer me a dinner voucher, which was a nice gesture, unfortunately I was already at dinner. The staff member offered me buffet breakfast on the Sunday which I happily accepted.
On my last night I plugged in my devices, ensuring the light was off, and had turned on the bedside lamps.
But, little did I know that even the individual lamp button had the capability to turn the powerpoint off. I woke that morning to once again have almost empty phones. I realised the error of my ways, that each switch had been connected or crosswired with the lamps power and the powerpoints. I do think that this a: needs to be fixed, b: a sign needs to be placed in the meantime.
The staff member that did help me was very polite and with the exception of probably not realising the lamp power button conundrum, was helpful. Also, on my final morning I was woken by unruly youths in the apartment below screaming and swearing and knocking over furniture whilst fighting. Finally, the toilet is placed in a weird corner meaning the door blocks it out and you have to open the door, then partially close the door to access it.
Buffet breakfast was somewhat underwhelming.
Next time in Alice I will most likely heed my co-workers advice and stay at the Double Tree. Jeff C. Julie W. Remember, the desert can get very cold at night, especially from May to October, so make sure you pack for both hot and cold weather. The hottest months are December to February.
