Atala Rene et Le Dernier Abencerage By Chateaubriand Atala — This is a short story published in and is regarded by scholars as the beginning of the romantic literature.
A modern reader may evaluate this work in keeping this observation in mind. It is a romantic love story of two young Indians of Florida. The author imagines a background of Indian tribes way of life and rituals, of white missionaries desperate efforts to convert the pagan population to Christianism, in the landscap Atala Rene et Le Dernier Abencerage By Chateaubriand Atala — This is a short story published in and is regarded by scholars as the beginning of the romantic literature.
The author imagines a background of Indian tribes way of life and rituals, of white missionaries desperate efforts to convert the pagan population to Christianism, in the landscape of Florida described with imaginary vegetation and inhabited by mostly imaginary animals. For a modern reader, the story could be disappointing. It tells of his early young life in Europe, his yet to come voyages to Italy and subsequent exile to America. Evaluation: 2 stars Le Dernier Abencerage — this is a short but beautiful romance in a different setting altogether, in Granada Spain at the time following the defeat of the Maurish Kings.
An elegant young Muslim, Aben-Hamet a descendant of these Kings is arriving at Granada with the intention of finding traces of the glory of his ancestors. Instead, he finds love with beautiful Bianca, a young Christian Spanish princess. The religious conflict between the two young people is leading to a dramatic outcome.
With an extensively and well-described visit of the castle of Alhambra by the two lovers and several duels on horseback assorted with beautiful dialogues, this is a work of excellence in style and originality. Evaluation: 4 stars For reader friends with the intention of reading all of Chateaubriand, this work is representing the author's young works. Oct 02, Mel Bossa rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , french-romantics. Je comprends mieux les romantiques en ayant lu Chateaubriand I think this collection of three tales on what is essentially le mal de vivre and being an exile both at home and abroad, is an exquisite love song to those of us who can't quite believe that the world, the material world, is man's triumph or legacy.
Chateaubriand writes of what they called the "savage life", painting a romantic picture of an existence in the new world full of simplicity and devotion to higher ideals, when in reality, there is nothing simple and savage about it. Living the way Chactas or Alata lived was far more complex and demanded much more intelligence and ethical rigor than the Old world assumed. Rene seems to seek innocence and a sort of mystical experience in his travels across the sea and his sojourning with the indigenous people living there.
In fact, there isn't innocence to be found, but rather, commitment to the better good of life in all its forms. Mal de vivre isn't magically cured by spending years in a foreign country, hoping their "ways" will cleanse you of your malady. Just like many folks think that back packing through a poor country will redeem their soul. In the end, I loved that Chateaubriand had Rene confess to the true motives behind his departure for the New world.
There was a lot of humility in these stories and I enjoyed them very much.
