Bold Strokes Books author Renee Roman is here! Thanks so much for having me and for the great program you provide to lesbian fiction readers and writers. You grew up with three older brothers. What was that like? Were they uber protective? Ha, funny you should ask. My brothers are 10, 11, and 12 years older than me and they all lived at home at one point during my early years.
The eldest and I were at odds most of the time.
The middle brother was always in so much trouble he rarely bothered. My youngest brother and I have always been close…friends from the time I was barely a teenager. We knew how to have fun, and we sometimes got in trouble together. I live in Albany, NY, same city I grew up in. There are familiar settings and references in my books. A cozy cabin, a crackling fire…the stuff dreams, and romances, are made of.
How was it and what was the most memorable experience? I love P-town! That was fun. This year I had two books available, Epicurean Delights released in January and Stroke of Fate Exclusively available in P-town, and general release in November I did two readings and signing. I enjoyed meeting readers and authors, and forming new connections…the sharing of love for the written word, is a gift.
What was the first lesbian book you read and did it inspire you to write lesfic? I read them consecutively. I was in high school and a voracious reader. I read everything I could get my hands on. Lesbian romance, intrigue, and erotica. Why limit my creativity? Romantic intrigue and romantic suspense are harder to craft because of the two parallel story arcs that need to be carefully interwoven. I like reading all genres, so why not write them? All my novels start with a single line or paragraph, or a character, and everything else develops from there.
Stroke of Fate is a romantic intrigue. Jade Rivers is an author who finds herself on the NY Times Best Sellers list and is suddenly in the mainstream literary world. Sean Moore is ex-Secret Service who was involved in a political scandal and left for the private sector. I love these characters.
Jade was the initial impetus for this novel. Sean became her bodyguard and the perfect counterpart in the relationship. Hard copies were available exclusively at P-town, but available from Bold Strokes Books on November 1 st , everywhere books are sold on November 15, Well, the author part was easy smiling. I am constantly writing, constantly formulating scenes and scenarios.
I pulled from some of my own experiences for Jade. I did quite a bit of research into the Secret Service, positions in the State, political policies, etc. I hear you enjoy cooking. If you were cooking a romantic meal for your wife Sue, what would it be? It would be one of her favorites, chicken parmesan with spaghetti, garlic bread, and Caesar salad. Candles and wine would round it out.
You have two frisky felines. Do they keep you company while your write and have they ever appeared in any of your stories? They will both come and join me in my study. Gizmo likes to sit behind me and purr. Sassy wants attention, so she rubs on everything she can. It was a pleasure meeting you in the UK. Thank you so much for the opportunity to speak with you and your followers. Sean Moore is a dedicated agent for the Secret Service until a political scandal forces her into the private sector, making her question the values she has always held true.
Jade Rivers has only ever wanted to be a writer. When an religious fanatic becomes a stalker and threatens her life, Jade hires Sean to be her personal bodyguard. Neither expects the instant attraction that sizzles between them. Renee Roman writes lesbian romance, mystery, and erotica. Her second work, Stroke of Fate , released November Her third novel, Where the Lies Hide , is scheduled for release in August Hot Women, Cybertentacles and Everything. I still get asked why I write and now publish erotica.
Why not move on and attempt to write the great American novel instead of all that sexy stuff? Why indeed? But I started writing erotic fiction about hot women almost immediately after that. My initial impulse was competitive: I wanted to write stories that were better than what I was reading.
Once I got past that, I wanted to play with ideas, settings, plots and characters in different ways than I was doing with my other writing.
And, as a lifelong science fiction and fantasy fan, I wanted to take things outside the realm of ordinary life: outer space, vampires, fairy tale settings, as well as more mundane crushes and desires. The glorious thing about writing erotica is that there is so much to play with as a writer. Writing spicy tales about hot guys or het alpha males pays better and has a bigger audience, certainly. But apart from the financial aspect, this has always struck me as a silly question. Women are fascinating, complicated and hot. But aside from my personal enthusiasms, one of the things that I like about writing erotica is that sex scenes can be used to express such a wide range of character emotions and development.
They can tell an entire story, if you do them right: love, lust, distrust, trust and a nuanced and lively bundle of other emotions and experiences, all told in ways that pull a reader in and get her juices flowing. The story is set in the far future, in a universe where faster than light travel has been achieved and large corporations run the show. Department of Sport and Recreation, W. Department of Sport and Recreation Staff , , , As many as one-third of all American women tiptoe through life as if they are walking on eggshells -- at home, they spend most of their time trying to avoid criticism, anger, put-downs, or cold shoulders from their husbands or boyfriends.
This verbal and emotional abuse can erupt over anything and everything, matters large and small: housework, cooking, work, spending money, buying household items and clothes for the kids, and going out. Clearly, verbal and emotional abuse is a serious problem. Relationship expert Dr. Steven Stosny has been featured on national media for the revolutionary techniques he uses in his Compassion-Power and Boot Camp programs, which help men rewire their resentment and anger, stop using emotionally abusive language and behavior, and compassionately recommit to their marriages and families.
Stosny puts his effective, highly sought-after program into print, making it widely available for the first time for women who want to stop walking on eggshells. Drawing on his seventeen years of experience treating thousands of clients, Dr. Stosny explains the many different forms a verbally and emotionally abusive relationship can take. He explains how to identify abuse and why it's important to take action to change the relationship -- for not only is verbal and emotional abuse monumentally destructive to both the adults in the relationship, it also hurts their children.
Stosny shows women and men how to apply his methods at home, shows women how to get their men to change, and demonstrates how they can know if change is permanent. Additionally, Dr. Stosny's program helps women recover from the pain and abuse by practicing self-healing skills so that they can reclaim their natural sense of competence and confidence. Using language that is more compassionate and accessible than in any other book on relationship abuse -- and different tactics from most other therapies and therapists -- You Don't Have to Take It Anymore presents a practical program that both women and men can use to stop verbal and emotional abuse.

This book is an intriguing narrative of the interplay between American religion and patterns of American culture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Laurence Moore considers the ways nationalism, the separation of church and state, democratic pluralism, and shifts in boundaries between secular and sacred practice have shaped American religion for the past two hundred years.
Bischoff, Carl Fredrik Bergstrm , , , The reasons why to delegate have been of prime interest to political science. The debate has concentrated on principal-agent theory to explain why politicians delegate decision-making to bureaucrats, to independent regulatory agencies, and to others actors and how to control these agents. By contrast, Changing Rules of Delegation focuses on these questions: Which actors are empowered by delegation? Are executive actors empowered over legislative actors? How do legislative actors react to the loss of power?
What opportunities are there to change the institutional rules governing delegation in order to re gain institutional power and, with it influence over policy outcomes? The authors analyze the conditions and processes of change of the rules that delegate decision-making power to the Commission's implementing powers under comitology. If they chose delegation, they still have to determine under which institutional rule comitology should operate.
These rules, too, distribute power unequally among actors and therefore raise the question of how they came about in the first place and whether and how the "losers" of a rule change seek to alter the rules at a later point in time. The Arthurian legend closes with a promise: On a distant day, when his country calls, the king will return.
His lost realm will be regained, and his shattered dream of an ideal world will, at last, be realized. This collection of original essays explores the issue of return in the modern Arthurian legend. With an Introduction by noted scholar Raymond H. Thompson and 13 essays by authors from the fields of literature, art history, film history, and folklore, this collection reveals the flexibility of the legend. Just as the modern legend takes the form current to its generation, the myth of return generates a new legend with each telling.
As these authors show, return can come in the form of a noble king or a Caribbean immigrant, with the mystery of an art theft or a dying boy's dream. Robinson , , , The Fabrication of Aboriginal History: The stolen generations Volume three, , Keith Windschuttle , , , Argues against the widely held belief that in the 20th century up to one in three Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their parents in order to put an end to Aboriginality. In , the Human Rights Commission made the most notorious accusation ever directed against Australia.
It accused this country of committing genocide against the Aborigines by stealing their children. The purported intention of governments and welfare officials was to institutionalise and assimilate the children into white society and thus rid Australia of its Aboriginal people. This book is based on an exhaustive examination of the archival records of child removals and of government policies and laws.
It also scrutinizes the work of the historians on whom the Human Rights Commission relied. It finds the historical research that created this interpretation was shoddy and untrustworthy. Aboriginal children were never removed from their families in order to put an end to Aboriginality or, indeed, for any improper government policy or program.
The small numbers of Aboriginal child removals in the twentieth century were almost all based on traditional grounds of child welfare. Most children affected had been orphaned, abandoned, destitute, neglected, malnourished or subject to various forms of domestic violence, sexual exploitation and sexual abuse. The notion that this amounted to genocide came from creative interpretations of selected evidence taken out of context by politically motivated historians. There were no Stolen Generations. In their introduction, James Moore and Adrian Desmond, acclaimed biographers of Charles Darwin, call for a radical re- assessment of the book, arguing that its core ideas on race were fired by Darwin's hatred of slavery.

Instruments of ratification have not been exchanged Dulwich and Camberwell Past, Richard Tames , , , Even in secular and civil contexts, marriage retains sacramental connotations. Yet what moral significance does it have? This book examines its morally salient features - promise, commitment, care, and contract - with surprising results.
In Part One, "De-Moralizing Marriage," essays on promise and commitment argue that we cannot promise to love and so wedding vows are mostly failed promises, and that marriage may be a poor commitment strategy. The book contends with the most influential philosophical accounts of the moral value of marriage to argue that marriage has no inherent moral significance.
Further, the special value accorded marriage sustains amatonormative discrimination - discrimination against non-amorous or non-exclusive caring relationships such as friendships, adult care networks, polyamorous groups, or urban tribes. The discussion raises issues of independent interest for the moral philosopher such as the possibilities and bounds of interpersonal moral obligations and the nature of commitment. The central argument of Part Two, "Democratizing Marriage," is that liberal reasons for recognizing same-sex marriage also require recognition of groups, polyamorists, polygamists, friends, urban tribes, and adult care networks.
Political liberalism requires the disestablishment of monogamous amatonormative marriage. Under the constraints of public reason, a liberal state must refrain from basing law solely on moral or religious doctrines; but only such doctrines could furnish reason for restricting marriage to male-female couples or romantic love dyads.
Restrictions on marriage should thus be minimized. But public reason can provide a strong rationale for minimal marriage: care, and social supports for care, are a matter of fundamental justice. Part Two also responds to challenges posed by property division on divorce, polygyny, and supporting parenting, and builds on critiques of marriage drawn from feminism, queer theory, and race theory. It argues, using the example of minimal marriage, for the compatibility of liberalism and feminism. This deciding Davis Cup match, played on the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon, was a battle of titans: the world's number one tennis player against the number two; America against Germany; democracy against fascism.
For five superhuman sets, the duos brilliant shotmaking kept the Centre Court crowdand the worldspellbound. But the matchs significance extended well beyond the immaculate grass courts of Wimbledon. Budge, the humble hard-working American who would soon become the first man to win all four Grand Slam titles in the same year, vied to keep the Davis Cup out of the hands of the Nazi regime. On the other side of the net, the immensely popular and elegant von Cramm fought Budge point for point knowing that a loss might precipitate his descent into the living hell being constructed behind barbed wire back home.
Born into an aristocratic family, von Cramm was admired for his devastating good looks as well as his unparalleled sportsmanship. But he harbored a dark secret, one that put him under increasing Gestapo surveillance. And his situation was made even more perilous by his refusal to join the Nazi Party or defend Hitler. Desperately relying on his athletic achievements and the global spotlight to keep him out of the Gestapos clutches, his strategy was to keep traveling and keep winning.
A Davis Cup victory would make him the toast of Germany. A loss might be catastrophic. Watching the mesmerizingly intense match from the stands was von Cramms mentor and all-time tennis superstar Bill Tildena consummate showman whose double life would run in ironic counterpoint to that of his German pupil. Set at a time when sports and politics were inextricably linked, A Terrible Splendor gives readers a courtside seat on that fateful day, moving gracefully between the tennis match for the ages and the dramatic events leading Germany, Britain, and America into global war. A book like no other in its weaving of social significance and athletic spectacle, this soul-stirring account is ultimately a tribute to the strength of the human spirit.

Most contain sexual content, much of it graphic, some of it off- putting, but none of it gratuitous. Sex - the ceaseless urge, its non-rational expression - sends the characters in these stories crashing into one another. The imaginary circumstances are both varied and extreme, but the fictional characters lust, act, react and grow in ways that feel familiar to readers making their ways through the real world.

Committee on National Security. Intertwining the lives of two young women as they discover their sexual and emotional powers, Saadawi weaves a dreamlike narrative that reveals how the patriarchal structures of Christianity and Islam are strikingly similar: physical violation of women is not simply a social or political phenomenon, it is a religious one as well.
