He was the first to capture an E-Boat. His successful leadership led to many more successes and his reputation as a fearless and dynamic leader remains a legend today. The book contains detailed and graphic accounts of running battles against the more heavily armed E-boats.
Tragically he was killed in action in April , having refused promotion and a job ashore. After a brief description of his early life, time at Oxford, his motor racing achievements including trophies at Le Mans in his Aston Martin and RN training, the book focuses on his exceptional wartime experiences. Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The author, Antony Hitchens, tells his father's story, drawing mainly on his father's own possible illegal war diary and a book that he wrote during WW2 but did not complete before his death. This is fleshed out and made comprehensible by contributions which the author has obtained from his father's comrades and acquaintances, as well as more official documents which would not have been available for many years after the war. The book begins with his father's genealogy: if this confuses those who are here for the war-stories, well: it's how Tacitus might have written a book about any illustrious Roman warrior!
But it soon gets onto pre-war action, on the seas around Cornwall and the Channel Islands and on the Le Mans motor racing circuit. It then gives a fascinating insight into how Robert Hitchens learned how to be a naval officer on minesweepers, then how he learned how to handle and especially fight a motor gunboat at a time when no-one in the Royal Navy really knew how to do the latter and when the available boats were very poorly armed. Robert Hichens spent the rest of his life trying to correct both deficiencies, and in this he perhaps met more opposition from those in charge of the Royal Navy than he should have done.
Some of the incidents described in this book are also described in Peter Scott's book "The Battle of the Narrow Seas" which is also available on Amazon.
In the Hichens account, the RAF merely furnishes the address of a secret civilian establishment at Orford Ness, which tested British guns on captured German armour, captured German guns on British armour and much more in the same vein. The Boffins took pity on the men in RNVR uniforms and kindly gave them those guns which they had long since finished testing, and which looked like they would fit on a motor gun boat. These were also guns which would accept 2 pounder and.
To anyone confused by this discrepancy I can supply an explanation with the benefit of 74 years of hindsight: by the time Peter Scott's book was published, at the end of WW2, the establishment at Orford Ness had moved onto testing atom-bomb components and the censor must have mildly suggested the slightest of re-writes! The author has done an excellent job of marrying his father's writings during the war with other well-researched information and has therefore done his father -and his comrades- proud.

So sad that he did not survive the war, but his legacy saved many allied lives and his name lives on. A true hero whom Cornwall is proud to claim as her own, despite his being born in England.
Very good it took me a long time to read this book,so sadthese guys had a very frustrating War with the Equipment, and they look like they have been forgotten by today's Navy. One person found this helpful.
