Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. I enjoyed this Amish story by Diane Craver. My wife has been interested in the Amish for some time and has read many of the better known authors in Amish fiction. I became interested as well and have read several authors myself. This book seemed different in that it is obviously set in the present time with the restrictions in this district seeming less stringent and the English using cell phones.
The story, however, shows characters struggling with many problems we all face including heart attacks, auto accidents, and relaxed attitudes about unmarried couples relationships. It seems good to me that the Amish in this story still hold to the old ways of courting and marriage, unchanged by more modern attitudes. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading about the Amish. Books written about the Amish culture always teaches me more and more about the way that society lives.
A Joyful Break was no exception with telling the story of a young Amish woman who had just lost her Mother and was blaming her Father and the lack of a phone and medical facilities for her Mother's death. She begins to wonder if the Amish faith is really for her and if she should break up with her boyfriend and leave the community altogether.
An aunt has invited her to spend a week with her family who are not Amish and she sees this as an opportunity to get away and clear her head while deciding what she needs to do with her life. Rachael has been so busy taking over her Mother's role in her family she has had no time to think of herself and Samuel.
She feels guilty blaming her Father but feels justified in doing so. Rachael leaves to spend time with her Aunt and finds answers for her life. She returns to Samuel and all seems to work out for that happily ever after one hopes to find in life. I recommend this to anyone who has faith God will answer prayer and guide them.
I enjoyed reading this book. I didn't mind that things seemed repetitive. Haven't you ever obsessed over something so much that it was on your mind all day, every day? The author emphasizes this turmoil that the main character was going through just as many people would. When I was little, I would obsess over wondering if my Mom would find out that I stole the cookie from the cookie jar instead of my brother when she told us not to eat any before supper.
